Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get emergency dental care?

The first step is to call our office directly. Emails can take time to be sent and received, but requesting help over the phone helps ensure our team can respond to you quickly. Once we pick up your call, try to explain your situation in as much detail as possible. The more we know, the more we can help you in the moment! We can, for example, provide first-aid guidance to make sure your immediate needs are taken care of.

From there, our friendly team will work with you to arrange an emergency appointment. We’ll see on the same day if possible, otherwise, we’ll schedule you for the next and earliest availability. Then you can sit back, take a deep breath, and let us take care of the rest!

What counts as a dental emergency?

Many different situations could be considered a dental emergency. Basically, if you need urgent care, your dental situation is most likely an emergency. Here are some more specific examples that can help give you an idea of what we mean:

  • A severe toothache, or one that lasts longer than one week.
  • A chipped, cracked, or lost tooth.
  • Sudden sensitivity to hot and cold foods.
  • A lost filling or crown.
  • A broken denture or other such restoration.
  • Gum, lip, or tongue injury (unless it involves broken bones or bleeding that persists for more than 10 minutes – then contact the ER right away!).

How often should I visit the dentist?

Experts agree that two times per year or once every six months is the magic number. Regular checkup and cleaning appointments give us the opportunity to scrub plaque and tartar from your teeth and monitor your oral health, after all! Conveniently, dental insurance often covers 90% to 100% of the costs for two of these appointments every year. Preventative dental care can be quite affordable, and will help reduce your risk of developing conditions like cavities and gum disease.

Can a dentist spot oral cancer?

Yes, and we’re glad you asked. Though not as common as other types of cancer, oral cancer can be deadly when it reaches advanced stages. Early detection is key for successful treatment. That’s another reason why experts recommend scheduling a checkup and cleaning appointment every six months; as part of your biyearly oral exam, we’ll perform an oral cancer screening. Rest assured, your dental team is quite thorough!
