Inlays and onlays are also known as “indirect fillings,” because unlike traditional fillings which are created on the tooth; they are made outside of the tooth. Inlays and onlays are created from an impression of the tooth and then bonded to the surface of the tooth.
Inlays are used when the damage is confined to the chewing surface of the tooth between the cusps. Onlays are more extensive and cover at least one cusp of the tooth. Unlike traditional fillings, inlays and onlays strengthen the structure of the tooth. They are natural looking and allow the tooth to function normally.
